Welcome to the NYC Summer 2009 Rio Carnival photo and video gallery page! This year I have more pictures from the world famous Sambadrome. For the uninitiated, the Sambadrome is the main ’stage’ for the world’s biggest Carnival parade. This year I went to the Sambadrome four times and enjoyed many hours of the parade, or desfile in Portuguese. The first day comprises of the Junior Carnival. This is where children and teens from the neighborhoods of the Main Samba Schools parade. The second day is where the ‘B’ group parades. The third and fourth days is the main event. This is when the ‘A’ group Samba Schools parade. This main group includes schools like “Beija-Flor”, “Imperatriz”, “Mangueira”, and “Salgueiro” this years winner.
To understand the scale of this event, imagine a Samba school that is made up of more than 3000 members. These 3000 members take an hour and a half to complete the half mile parade route. The drummers number 300 strong and the floats are a marvel of art, engineering, and construction and can be as tall as three stories! Truly an amazing experience.
In addition to the main event, I captured some Rio street carnival action, and of course, some beach action complete with gorgeous Brazilian beauties.

Enjoy,

Terry.
