Seems like you can’t walk around New York City during the summer without running into a free concert in a park. Today I did just that. I was shopping for  a camera lens and I ran into an Ashanti concert. She was having a free album release concert in conjunction with J & R Music World. What luck! She came on stage with four dancers and did some of her big hits. Joints like “Foolish”, “Happy”, and “Baby”. She also performed shortened versions of songs on her new album entitled, “The Declaration”. Ashanti gave us a taste of “Body On Me”, “Things You Make Me Do”, and “The Way That I Love You”. The dancers were tight and Ashanti had fun letting the crowd know how great it was to be “back home” in New York (Ashanti’s home town is Glen Cove, NY). The music is straight up R&B and radio friendly. Enjoy the pictures and the video of the concert. Another great free New York City performance.

No time to write review. Read about Kinky from Wikipedia. Enjoy the pictures:

Kinky is a five member band from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico formed in 1998. It consists of members Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Góngora, and Cesar Pliego. The band’s music takes heavy influence from Latin music as well as rock, dance, and techno. They sing mostly in Spanish but some of their songs contain lyrics in English. They are signed with Sonic360 Records since the release for their first studio album.

Their first album, called Kinky, was released in early 2002 and was a success in Latin America, and had some success in the U.S. Their 2nd single, titled Más, is nowadays their most known single all around the world.

“Más” was used in commercials for Nissan and the NBC Mexican mafia mini-series Kingpin. It was also featured in the video game SSX 3 and the movie Man on Fire, along with another song by Kinky, “Field Goal”, and it is also featured in the sandbox game Crackdown.

Today was an amazing day of celebration and faith in the park. It was Summerstage’s annual Gospel Day. The bill was composed of Donald Lawrence, Dave Holister, and Hezekiah Walker. We got their in time to see about half of Dave Holister’s set and the headliner, Pastor Hezekiah Walker. Hezekiah Walker is head of the Love Fellowship Tabernacle Church and winner of several Grammy Awards for his work. This was an especially hot day and the foot stomping, sweat inducing gospel music coming off the stage just made it hotter! The music alternated between modern popular gospel music like Hezekiah’s hit, “Faithful is Our God”, and older gospel music. The song “Faithful is Our God” has the popular hook “…and I rejoice 2 day …”.Between the singing there was time for worship and praise. They brought some church to the park. At one point Hezekiah had the audience singing, “I need you to Survive” to each other while they embraced. It is not usual for complete strangers to show love and embrace each other in New York City, but such is the power of a common ground in faith and respect for other human beings. One of the powerful aspects of Gospel music is that they repeat the last section of the song several times. For some people this might be a nuisance, for others it creates a rising wave of excitement and movement as you ‘get into it’. There were no shortage of excitement waves in the park today. The performances heated up the park today, not just the sun.
