I was hanging out with my girlfriend and her cousin in the East Village. We just had some delicious Thai food at Why Curry which is close to Tompkins Square Park. We noticed that there was something going on in the park so naturally, we took a look. Turns out we stumbled onto the annual HOWL! Festival in the park. Thankfully I walk with my Canon SD755 camera almost everywhere I go. So, I took pictures and videos from the festival. The performances are Vaudevillian and Burlesque. Every performance pushes the boundaries of the ordinary. What is the HOWL! Festival? Below is the description from the Official HOWL! Web Site:
The annual Howl! Festival named in honor of the groundbreaking poem by Allen Ginsberg and produced every summer celebrates the East Village and Lower East Side’s role as a preeminent locus of culture.
Centered in Tompkins Square Park, the festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors bringing to the clubs, galleries, parks, streets, and theaters of Manhattan’s Lower East Side an explosion of dance, film, food, music, performance, painting, poetry, sculpture, and theater.Luminaries like Boy George, Steve Buscemi, Steve Earle, Karen Finley, Nan Goldin, Luis Guzman, Jim Jarmusch, Moby, Lou Reed, Ed Sanders, and Suzanne Vega draw the festival’s crowds but its real stars are the hardworking independent artists and writers who continue to invigorate the neighborhood with their inconoclastic spirit.

Trucks with booming sound systems pumping Calypso tunes. Scantily clad curvy women walking and dancing down the street, letting it all hang out. Vendors selling tasty home made Caribbean dishes. And, every one having a good time. This is the happenings at the annual Caribbean Labor Day Parade in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This year the energy seemed a bit lower than in past years. This might have been due to the long amount of time it took between trucks. In any case, when the trucks did past by the music was great and the revelers were having a good time. That good time lasted for a small time for the audience because the trucks went by fast. I went out into the street and shot video as they past by. It gives you a great feel for being in the band.

Mao Magazine Fashion Week Party

Posted by nycsummer On September - 9 - 2007

Near the beginning of every fashion season, the start of Spring and Fall, a week is set aside as Fashion Week. Mao Magazine welcomes Fashion Week with its annual decadent kick off party. Mao Magazine covers the fashion vanguard and to outsiders the images it publishes may seem strange. That also goes for its parties. This is my third time going to this by invitation only party. While the shock value has worn off I still raise an eyebrow at some of the more interesting happenings. The music was pumping, the bar was opened, and there where no shortage of flamboyant party goers, as you can tell by the pics.

Their song selection traversed the World as usual. This time they even played some Brazilian Funk, “Que Dancar, Que Dancar!” All in all a great time.If you missed it you can experience their first Pier Party for this summer here.
