Today was an amazing day of celebration and faith in the park. It was Summerstage’s annual Gospel Day. The bill was composed of Donald Lawrence, Dave Holister, and Hezekiah Walker. We got their in time to see about half of Dave Holister’s set and the headliner, Pastor Hezekiah Walker. Hezekiah Walker is head of the Love Fellowship Tabernacle Church and winner of several Grammy Awards for his work. This was an especially hot day and the foot stomping, sweat inducing gospel music coming off the stage just made it hotter! The music alternated between modern popular gospel music like Hezekiah’s hit, “Faithful is Our God”, and older gospel music. The song “Faithful is Our God” has the popular hook “…and I rejoice 2 day …”.Between the singing there was time for worship and praise. They brought some church to the park. At one point Hezekiah had the audience singing, “I need you to Survive” to each other while they embraced. It is not usual for complete strangers to show love and embrace each other in New York City, but such is the power of a common ground in faith and respect for other human beings. One of the powerful aspects of Gospel music is that they repeat the last section of the song several times. For some people this might be a nuisance, for others it creates a rising wave of excitement and movement as you ‘get into it’. There were no shortage of excitement waves in the park today. The performances heated up the park today, not just the sun.

Oleta Adams lit up the Downtown Brooklyn Metrotech promenade with her beautiful booming voice. What a voice she has! Oleta gained famed back in 90’s with hits like “Circle of One”, and “Get Here”. She and her band performed these and many other songs. Their style is R&B, Gospel, and Jazz. Oleta puts on a tight, lively performance. She dances around the stage and dances behind her keyboard. She enjoyed being there to perform for us. At one point she remarked how blessed she was to be able to perform under the trees at Metrotech in great weather.

Partway through her show, Oleta and the band cleared the stage to showcase one of her backup singers sing out in front to promote her new CD.

Oleta Adams delivers a solid performance that gets the crowd going. She has a great voice and a love for entertaining her audience.

Did I mention her great voice?
