2010 Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Posted by nycsummer On June - 20 - 2010

What a difference a year makes! Last year’s parade was wet and gray with only a few spectators. This year the weather was perfect. We had blue skies with temperatures around 85 degrees, and large crowds. Like last weekend’s Naked Bike Ride there was plenty of anti BP sentiment. There were also no shortage of beautiful women in creative and revealing costumes. This year’s King Neptune was Lou Reed of “Walk on the Wild Side” fame. Queen Mermaid was Performance Artist/Inventor Laurie Anderson. The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is another reason to love New York this time of year.

Enjoy,

Terry.

New York City Naked Bike Ride 2010

Posted by nycsummer On June - 13 - 2010

Welcome to Summer in New York 2010!

Let’s start off this Summer in New York season with naked people on bicycles. We had the 2nd annual New York leg of the World Naked Bike Ride this Saturday.

Wikipedia says about the World Naked Bike Ride:
“World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is an international clothing-optional bike ride in which participants plan, meet and ride together en masse on human-powered transport (the vast majority on bicycles, and fewer on skateboards, rollerblades, roller skates) to “protest oil dependency and celebrate the power and individuality of our bodies and they are supporting local political parties such as the Work Less Party”.[1]”

I covered the 1st annual Naked Bike Ride last year. (Link here). Last year’s ride had a relatively small group of riders with two topless women with body paint and a whole lot of dudes. This year we had a larger group of riders and a lot more topless women with a few fully nude. Finally a Naked Bike Ride with actual naked people! Nice! The majority of the pictures are at the staging area in Brooklyn. You’ll see plenty of beautiful riders posing for pictures and getting their bodies painted for the ride. Pictures of naked bike riders are towards the end of gallery. This year’s ride had the spectre the the British Petroleum disaster in the Gulf as a back drop. So, you will also see plenty anti-BP slogans.

Okay, enough talk show me the naked people!

Enjoy,

Terry.

I was hanging out with my girlfriend and her cousin in the East Village. We just had some delicious Thai food at Why Curry which is close to Tompkins Square Park. We noticed that there was something going on in the park so naturally, we took a look. Turns out we stumbled onto the annual HOWL! Festival in the park. Thankfully I walk with my Canon SD755 camera almost everywhere I go. So, I took pictures and videos from the festival. The performances are Vaudevillian and Burlesque. Every performance pushes the boundaries of the ordinary. What is the HOWL! Festival? Below is the description from the Official HOWL! Web Site:
The annual Howl! Festival named in honor of the groundbreaking poem by Allen Ginsberg and produced every summer celebrates the East Village and Lower East Side’s role as a preeminent locus of culture.
Centered in Tompkins Square Park, the festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors bringing to the clubs, galleries, parks, streets, and theaters of Manhattan’s Lower East Side an explosion of dance, film, food, music, performance, painting, poetry, sculpture, and theater.Luminaries like Boy George, Steve Buscemi, Steve Earle, Karen Finley, Nan Goldin, Luis Guzman, Jim Jarmusch, Moby, Lou Reed, Ed Sanders, and Suzanne Vega draw the festival’s crowds but its real stars are the hardworking independent artists and writers who continue to invigorate the neighborhood with their inconoclastic spirit.

Mao Magazine Fashion Week Party

Posted by nycsummer On September - 9 - 2007

Near the beginning of every fashion season, the start of Spring and Fall, a week is set aside as Fashion Week. Mao Magazine welcomes Fashion Week with its annual decadent kick off party. Mao Magazine covers the fashion vanguard and to outsiders the images it publishes may seem strange. That also goes for its parties. This is my third time going to this by invitation only party. While the shock value has worn off I still raise an eyebrow at some of the more interesting happenings. The music was pumping, the bar was opened, and there where no shortage of flamboyant party goers, as you can tell by the pics.

Enjoy,
