The Mighty Sparrow

Posted by nycsummer On July - 9 - 2010

For over a half a century The Might Sparrow has kept fans of Calypso happy with his imaginative and fun loving songs. Here he is at 74, 53 years after his first album, “Calypso Kings and Pink Gin”, was released in 1957. His age showing, he needs help to walk, he sits on stage when he sings. But, the fire in his eyes still burns. I remember those eyes when I was growing up in Barbados. When I saw him today at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts R&B Festival it brought back memories. Songs like “Jean and Dinah” and “Obeah Wedding” are classic Calypso tunes that remain danceable party songs to this day. Today was an especially humid Summer day coming off of a three day heat wave here in New York City. The heat may have taken a toil on Sparrow. At one point he had to leave the stage to drink and rest. I thought he might have been done, but he surprised us with a second set. His legs not functioning like they use to he sits in his chair and dances. His face as expressive as every. You can tell this man has entertaining in his DNA. His soul is doing a dance that his body can no longer keep up with. I’m happy I caught this legend.

Caribbean Labor Day Carnival Parade

Posted by nycsummer On September - 2 - 2008

This year’s Caribbean Labor Day parade in Brooklyn fell on a perfect Summer’s day. Blue skies, warm sun, and lots of scantily clad women jumping around to Soca, Calypso, Reggae and Compas music. This year we got a performance from Wyclef Jean on top of a float. The crowd went wild as he passed by. By comparison this years crowd was larger that last year’s. Unfortunately, the NYPD does a great job of dampening the energy of the crowd by keeping each band far apart from each other. So, the excitement is allowed to die down between each band. Each band then becomes a separate performance with an intermission in between versus a continual extravaganza that a parade is meant to be. In spite of that the separate performances were fun to be a part of. Labor day is the unofficial end of summer. But, as long as there is something interesting to see, I’ll attend, take pictures, and post them. Til’ the next event,

Trucks with booming sound systems pumping Calypso tunes. Scantily clad curvy women walking and dancing down the street, letting it all hang out. Vendors selling tasty home made Caribbean dishes. And, every one having a good time. This is the happenings at the annual Caribbean Labor Day Parade in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This year the energy seemed a bit lower than in past years. This might have been due to the long amount of time it took between trucks. In any case, when the trucks did past by the music was great and the revelers were having a good time. That good time lasted for a small time for the audience because the trucks went by fast. I went out into the street and shot video as they past by. It gives you a great feel for being in the band.

Enjoy,

Today’s show was a concert ‘hosted’ by Wyclef Jean and Papa Jube. It was a concert to raise awareness for Wyclef’s Yéle Haïti foundation. The foundation reinforces projects that benefit the people of Haiti. The concert was also a showcase of artists signed to Wyclef Jean’s record label, Sa Pase records. The artists were Junior Reid, Djakout Mizik, Joey Starr, Black Alex, and Mecca a.k.a GRIMO.The performances were a mix of Haitian hip-hop and compas, and Jamaician reggae and were all hot! As a matter of fact at about 93 degrees out there, everyone there was scorching!Mecca and Black Alex were spitting their style of Haitian Creole Hip-hop. Their flow was quick and powerful.Junior Reid came out and set the park jumping. He covered a few reggae standards that had the crowd singing along with passion. The headliners where the Compas sensation Djakout Mizik. As much energy as Junior Reid put out these guys went even further. The music was hot and the crowd went wild! There is something about being in a crowd of fans of the performer and the music being performed. Watch the videos and feel the energy that Djakout Mizik created in the park. (I’ll add the videos later this week)Enjoy,
